Under federal law, debt collectors and collection agencies who violate any provisions of Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) or state statutes like California's Rosenthal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (RFDCPA) in their attempt to collect a consumer debt from you, may be liable to you for statutory damages of up to $1,000, plus any actual damages that you may have suffered, and your attorney's fees and costs. In a few states, such as California, the state statutes provide additional protection which extends to collection efforts by creditors, and statutory damages of up to $1,000. In summary, debt collectors or collection agencies (creditors in California) who abuse, harass, or violate your rights may be required by law to pay your attorney's fees.
